The Supermarket Cashier, Episode Four

“I’m pregnant.” Msizi tells Sizwe as soon as they arrived home. They were resting in the living room and munching suya which they had bought on their way back. Sizwe was not expecting that Msizi would be pregnant, so, he was taken aback by the revelation. They have always been careful during bedroom action, but apparently, they had thrown caution to the wind since they moved in and started living together.

“Really? Are you sure of what you are saying? Did you check very well? Have you gone to the hospital for a confirmation test?” Sizwe said with surprise written all over his face.

“I have not gone to the hospital but I’m sure I’m pregnant. I’m not a child. I have been feeling strangely since the past two weeks so I took a test and it came out positive, showing that I’m pregnant. Here is the pregnancy test strips.” Msizi said, handing over the two strips to Sizwe. She had done the test twice just to be double sure that there was no mistake.

“So we are going to have a baby?” Sizwe asked rhetorically as if he does not already know the outcome of a pregnancy.

“Yes my dear, you will soon be a father. I’m so happy that God has blessed me with a baby without any stress. When I give birth to this baby, I will spoil the child with attention and love. But from your reaction, it seems you are not happy my love. Is everything alright?” Msizi asked after she noticed the way Sizwe squeezed his face.

“Why wouldn’t I be happy? I’m just shocked and totally short of words. My life has changed before my very eyes. Within a few months, I became the owner of many houses. I became a car owner. I have proposed marriage to my girlfriend and she accepted. And now, I’m expecting a baby. These serries of blessings just shocked me because of how the whole thing lined up as if I’m the only person loved by God. My love, I’m overwhelmed with joy. I don’t even know how to express it. My joy is overflowing and beyond words.” Sizwe said, placing his left hand on Msizi’s belly as if he wanted to communicate with the unborn baby.

“I felt the same way when I did the test and found out that I’m going to be a mother. This is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. My joy knows no bounds.” Msizi said. She was already getting tired and she was almost sleeping off. Sizwe stood up and hugged her tightly as both of the went into the bathroom to rest.

“Now that we are going to have a baby, it means our lives will automatically change. We are supposed to be thinking of new ways of making money and also thinking about the future of our baby. I think I’m going to resign from my position at the supermarket. I will like to have more time to focus on establishing and running my own business. I want to be my own boss. I want to be a successful business man, so that when my children grow up, they will have something tangible to inherit from me. I don’t want them to end up like me who had to depend on jobs that barely paid me enough money to take care of myself, not to talk of raising a family. Imagine if not for you, I wonder what I would have done in this life. I’m lucky to have you.” Sizwe said.

“I’m lucky to have you too. I’m sure there’s no any other man earth that would have loved me the way you do. You are the best thing that ever happened to me.” Msizi said. However, she was not comfortable when Sizwe said he was going to resign from the supermarket. This means their source of income could be discovered by

the owner of the supermarket and they will be in trouble.
