Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 6
“I didn’t know you had a car.” She says.
“It is a company car and i don’t like to drive.”
She frowns.
“Why?”
“Trying to save space. A third of the cars on the traffic can fit on few busses thus reducing time spent on the road the emissions of harmful gases.” I say.
She folds her lips together. A habit I have realized she has when she gets into deep thoughts.
“What?” She turns when she feels my stare
“Nothing.” I turn my focus on starting the car.
I once purchased a car but hated how every morning getting to work made me miserable. All the time spent on the road and the road rage people had. I witnessed a guy pull a gun and shoot someone just because they were slow to move when the traffic light changed.
“What kind of music do you listen to?” She leans forward.
“Don’t?” My tone comes across as callous.
But it is too late as the song starts to play. And the familiar song, moon harvest by Neil young fills the small space.
“You listen to oldies?” She asks.
In a swift manner turn it off, almost yanking at it. Athena stares at me confused by my irrational action.
“It is Esme’s favorite song.” I whisper.
She sighs remorsefully.
“I didn’t mean to…I am sorry.” She apologizes.
“Please ask permission before touching any of my things.” I come across edgier than I intended.
She coils back onto her seat taking out her phone. I note that she occasionally gets lost into a phone. A similar habit Esme had, surprised two different people can at one point be similar. Though hers seems like a coping mechanism as she opens her candy crash game and starts to play. Stealing all her attention.
I don’t like the fact that my anger has become so common, and that the recipient is just as much of a victim as I am.
I cast her a final glance and commence to drive. The roads are deserted and we don’t spot anyone walking along the sidewalks. However as we get closer to the city center, we note the people scattered outside the nightclubs.
When my stomach grumbles and I realize I won’t be able to carry out my plan for the night if I’m hungry, I make an impromptu decision. I find myself stopping outside a café, Mama’s pride, where i used to meet Mason for lunch because our workplaces were so close.
“This why you were so secretive?” She asks disappointed as we step out.
“I am hungry.” I say as she fall into steps behind me. ” And i am sure you are too.” I add.
“What gives you that impression?” She groans.
“You can’t eat alone, so you probably didn’t eat waiting for me.” I inform her.
She turns red embarrassed and confirming my words.
There is no one inside the Café.
“Where would you like to sit?”
She appears surprised by my question, but quickly recovers. Her eyes flickering around the room, her lips pursed in an attempt to make a decision. “There,” she says finally.
It’s a table in the café’s center. It would be too inconvenient on a busy day because people would bump into it as they moved. I’m not sure why she makes such an odd choice, but I follow her. She seems content with it and i decide that is enough for me.
