Episode 18
She followed up on Reginaâs movement. From the point she left her husbandâs- Samâs house till the point she got to her parentâs house and then to Portharcourt. She got eyes on her.
She was the one who drafted Steve, the guy who posed as a receptionist at the hotel, that led to me been captured by my uncleâs guys. I had felt that his face was familiar, just that I could not place at that point, where I had seen his face. He was the contractor. He was the one that brought Mrs. Dee in to meet the âclubâ guys. He was the link. The middleman. So it was all planned along, for him to get a buyer, a planned buyer, who happened to be Princessâs grandmom to be the one to have Princess.
I was in the dark about the whole thing. I was known, but I was left to myself to do what I was doing, even though I was been watched.
They needed my greed to drive me to do what was needed to be done. It was sufficient motivation for what they would want from me.
The âclubâ guys were kept in the dark as far as I knew. They did not know what was really going on. I wondered if they would have really cared if they knew what was on. I felt it would not be so much of an issue as far as they got the money needed. And that- money was the least of the issues on Mrs. Deeâs mind. On the other hand, they might have an issue if they has known, especially since they always want to wield power and have control.
What then was the biggest issue in her mind? What then was her greatest agenda and motive? Getting her granddaughter back? Getting her sonâs marriage fixed? Relieving herself of the burden of guilt she had been feeling for siding with her controlling and manipulative husband when Samâs life was tossed back and forth? Or trying to redeem her motherhood role towards Sam? Whatever it was, it might not really matter, even though it could be more of more than one factor. Combination of factors? Yes. But she went to work and the result at the end of it all was Princess got united with her parents and they all returned home and the marriage was restored.
While still in prison, because my uncle ensured that I faced the law. He was always a stickler for what is right. The only mercy he showed was to see that my sentence was reduced to two years. I was left to face the consequence of my action.
But that was not all, I was kept in the dark regarding the whole background stuffs surrounding the incident throughout the time I was kept in prison. I was not even informed that Princess had been restored to her parents when she was. I was whisked away at the point when the âstagedâ search for her was still on.
And so, I missed the rest of the events and was left to the working of guilt in my heart.
The Good Book said, âGodly sorrow leads to repentanceâ. Sorrow did its work. Guilt had its way. And in all, I felt so bad for what I had done and go depressed and came out of the depression and resolved to be a better person. But that was not all. The fact that I resolved to be a better person was not all. I got another benefit.
You want to know what it is? Should I tell you? I guess I should. Mrs. Dee secretly gave me some money afterwards- three million naira when I left the prison to start something with my life.
âA fresh startâ, she had said, and added, â You donât want anybody to know about thisâ
