âGuns and butlersâ
Daniel POV
âWho the hell are you again?â
Royal families had a rule about hiring staff â butlers were supposed to be at least over twenty.
My new one didnât look more than eight.
âMy name is Charles Andrew Milsworth II, Your Majesty.â The guy buttoned his cuffs nervously, bowing for the third time. I walked over to the doorway, watching him fidget with a piece of card stock.
The guy was sweating bullets.
On a normal day, I wouldâve gone easy on the young and impressionable Mr. Milsworth.
Unfortunately, today was the day I almost fĂŒcked the woman I was supposed to marry in front of the only woman Iâd cared about.
Normal had been half a bottle of Vodka ago.
âSo Charlie.â I said, arching a brow. The guy bowed again, real low.
âGround rules : Donât bother exercising your back at my front door. Donât call me âYour Majestyâ and donât ever call yourself âThe Secondâ at anything just because your dad had sex and wasnât creative about it. We clear?â
He nodded vigorously. âYes, sire.â
âGood. Now whereâs Marcus?â
âI believe heâs in Vetresca, sire.â He said doubtfully. âKing Anton requested his presence.â
I let it go after that. I personally had rules, seeing as I was staff here myself.
What the Royals wanted, they got. No questions asked.
âSo are you here to give me something or just admire the view, Charlie?â
The boy looked at the paper heâd almost torn, sheepish.
Embarrass a random stranger for kicks and giggles? Check.
âThe, um â the Council of Trials has called an emergency meet at the church, sire.â He said, handing me the official document heâd been torturing. âItâs in one hour.â
I groaned internally as the headache set in.
Get hammered for a super important meeting with world leaders? Check.
âNow, Mr. Milsworth.â I said, absently thinking about Marcus. âHow good are you finding my socks?â
Half an hour later, I walked down the same street to the church Iâd come down before, with no visible blood on my clothes.
Charles wasnât bad at his job.
He was just new and I was just bĂźtchy.
I was a little lost in my thoughts so I didnât pay attention to the road.
So it was completely my fault when I bumped into a woman head on. My bodyguard aimed his assault rifle at her head before I could even apologise.
And boy, did I have a lot more than that to apologise for.
Adriana didnât look at me, managing to steady herself. The awkward silence between us seemingly stretched on forever. Her own guardian was eyeing the gun with apprehension.
After a long time, I happened to find my voice.
âPlease get that gun far away from the Princess.â
Or shoot me. That would work better.
âMy apologies, Your Grace.â Adriana said, stiffly. âI wasnât aware of what was happening around me.â
I flinched at the double meaning .
Well, that makes two of us.
âAdriana.â I run a hand through my hair. âI need to talk to you. I am sorry. I really am.â
She looked up at me. For a moment, I could see the pain flash through her beautiful eyes. Then it was gone.
âYou have nothing to apologise for. Have a nice day, Your Grace.â She said simply, walking away.
I couldâve asked her to wait. I couldâve gone after her.
Hell, I couldâve built a fĂŒcking shrine in her honour and apologised to her on my knees, because thatâs how sorry I was.
But today I was Prince Xavier Grigori.
The bÀstard who was supposed to marry her twin sister and have tons of vampire babies with her.
I sighed.
Screw up my life? Again?
Check.
Iâd hoped that the meeting would be boring enough that I could zone out, pass out, whatever.
As the guardians hauled in a little girl with flaming red hair and calm green eyes, I knew I had no such luck.
âDarius.â I said quietly, as Ira was made to bow in front of us. Her lips were chapped and she was wearing what Iâd last seen her in, only the pretty pink top was now covered in dirt and scars. âWhat have you done?â
â My homework.â The vampire Prince said, calmly. âWould you care to explain who this is, Your Highness?â
Ira barely glanced at me. But I understood what she needed me to say.
âI donât know.â I said, for the first time in my life, lying for the right reason. âDarius, donât you see what youâre doing? This is a child.â
âThis child killed my father.â He said, as there was a gasp from the other members at the table.
The King of Lirin, the country of shapeshifters, scoffed. He was a handsome older man with salt and pepper hair, in a crisp grey suit and a raven at his shoulder.
âThat canât be true.â He said, voicing what everyone was thinking. âWhat possible motive could she have, Prince Azaria?â
â King.â Darius corrected him, icily. âAs of my fatherâs funeral, this is my first day as King. And as for motive,
they donât need one. Theyâve hated us since the start.â
I donât think Iâd ever prayed in my life despite being an angel. Sitting in the middle of a church as Darius was preaching war seemed like a great time to start though.
Please donât say it. Donât go there.
âThis right here is a human.â Darius said, fire in his silvery eyes. Ira flinched. âI wonder what it means when a human girl murders an Immortal King.â
As the whispers and the arguments started up, I looked at Ira. She was still calm, but there was a chilling bleakness under that composure.
âIt doesnât have to mean anything.â I said, in one last ditch attempt. âWhat if someone hired her? Someone Immortal?â
âThatâs a theory.â The King of Lirin agreed.
âOne thatâs a bit too convenient?â Darius asked, looking at me dead in the eyes. âYouâd be surprised to know who we found with her. A friend of friend, one would say.â
I swallowed.
Victoria.
And Xavier .
Suddenly, the stained glass window at the head of the church shattered and coloured glass showered over the coffin of the dead King.
A figure of a man moved stealthily and a red dot hovered over my chest.
FĂŒck .
I got under the table as shots rang out. Before the guardians could even reach for their guns, the King of Lirinâs wine glass hit the ground and his body followed suit.
The shadow disappeared just as quickly as it had come.
Everyone was in shock.
In place of his raven, a lanky boy with black hair and hazel eyes kneeled next to the body. Iraâs cool facade finally broke, as Cyril closed his fatherâs eyes.
As an afterthought, I realised the irony that Iâd accused a Prince of stealing my watch.
The chaos that followed was sparked by one question.
âStill think that a human did it, King Azaria?â
