âPirate Kingâ
Victoria POV
Watching the sunset by the beach was supposed to be romantic.
Biscuit took a long swig from the bottle heâd stolen from the farmerâs cellar, as the waves touched our feet.
âYo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!â He called out, whistling the tune.
I rolled my eyes, grabbing the bottle from him.
Screw romantic.
Sun down meant prime time for creeps .
âSo do we have a plan, Captain Biscuit Sparrow?â I asked, crossing my legs.
âWe scurry forth. Seaward and to the great lands beyond, wench.â
I had sand practically everywhere, I hadnât showered in two days, and my last meal had been a crab, unfortunate enough to snap its claws at me.
I wouldâve thrown the bottle at him, but I needed the alcohol too much.
âCut it out.â I punched his arm. âWhat are we going to do? Arenât you the one with the assignments and the big plans?â
He lay back against the sand. The sky was golden red painted with a tinge of pink and faint green, the waves glistening with the fading lights.
âThe biggest plan we have now is to wait.â
My stomach growled.
D–n poetic.
âGreat idea, Sherlock.â I muttered. âWeâll just wait until I lose twenty more pounds. Because I really want to audition for Victoriaâs Secret in the middle of fĂŒcking nowhere.â
Biscuit sat up on his elbows.
âWeâd have to wait an awfully long time in that case, Shortcake.â
I smacked him not for the first time today.
âYou just called me fat.â
He gave me a once over. I couldnât help noticing how he spent about five seconds longer on my breasts and my butt.
âHoney, Iâm calling you perfectly fat.â Biscuit lay back down, smiling like an angel.
âIâm calling you perfectly tactless.â I mimicked his tone, fuming.
I didnât notice his hand as he tugged at my wrist. I fell back into the sand next to him. His arm snaked around my waist and he pulled me close so I was a mere inch from his face.
I shouldâve punched him.
âHowâs that for tactless?â Biscuit looked me in the eyes, his own an endless ocean reflecting the sky. âYou fit in my arms the right way and thatâs all that really matters, baby.â
I couldnât punch him.
D–n it.
It was a weird thing. I could rewire a bomb without a single doubt but it was times like these when I had no idea what I was supposed to do.
Was I supposed to say âGee, thanks. I think youâre insanely hot tooâ?
Was I supposed to act all shy and shĂźt?
Was I supposed to kiss him?
Biscuit was still looking at me.
Say. Something.
âCheesy much?â I smiled, on the borderline between awkward and creepy. âDid this actually work on the other chicks youâve banged?â
Rejected a compliment, killed the mood and brought up all past lovers in one sentence.
Iâm clearly amazing at romance.
Biscuit laughed. âNo.â
I arched a brow.
âBecause Iâd never use that on them.â He finished, his eyes dark. âThey were too easy for me. Youâre the best challenge Iâve had in a long time.â
âThe thing is,â I put a finger over his lips, drawing close. His eyes were smouldering and his body was taut.
One minute he was holding me, the next I was on top of him, pinning his wrists with one hand and holding one of his blades against his throat.
âIâm not your challenge, Biscuit.â
He simply smiled.
It took him the same amount of time to break my grip, toss the knife away by the blade and pull me down to his chest. I could hear his heartbeat through his shirt and feel his lips brushing my hair.
âI sure hope not, sweetheart.â He said, calmly. âBecause I happen to win at everything I try.â
I pulled away on principle, despite the fact that this handsome, infuriating bastÀrd was finally seeing me as something other than the bßtch who tried to kill his friend.
âNot this time.â I said, firmly ignoring the voices in my head. âThis time you shut the fĂŒck up and think of something useful for us to do.â
He gave me a cryptic smile.
âI already have.â
The sun sank below the horizon and night fell fast in a matter of minutes. Once it was dark, the strangest thing happened.
Beneath the water, pale blue lights began glowing. It was like a dance, flickering and waning until finally, it emerged from the surface in the form of a person.
From behind us, near the shore the same breed of light people emerged from the trees, only these were golden.
I was legitimately scared I was going to be kidnapped by aliens and have something shoved up my butt.
I looked at Biscuit. He appeared to have no such worries, which was a little comforting.
âShould I be scared?â I asked, as quietly as I could.
âYes.â He said, deadbeat. âYou should probably dig a hole and shove your head in the sand like an ostrich. That should help immensely.â
I glared at him.
One of the light people floated close to us. Biscuit extended his hand towards it and a thread of gold connected him to the light.
In response, the thing â
Bowed?
âThereâs a reason Corsica still has humans.â He said, as the light transformed into a whirlwind. I noticed that his eyes were paler than usual. âThis is a sylph, an air spirit. They inhabit mortals until nightfall, dead or alive. They also happen to be amazing at flying. This kind ladyâs agreed to take us to Vetresca.â
As the sylph lifted him off the ground, I wondered if my day could get any weirder.
âWhy do they like you?â Biscuit looked like the Flash in slow motion, as the spirit surrounded him. âAnd how do you know that itâs a âsheâ?â
âProbably because I donât ask questions like that.â He said rolling his eyes. âI read her mind.â
Reading minds, teleporting to islands, controlling random glowing lights, cooking stuff, constantly ruining my life â
Biscuit had a super diverse skill set.
âSo.â I muttered, as another light began pooling at my feet. âWhatâs the assignment again?â
Biscuit shouldâve been crowned the king of master plans.
âSave the world. And try not to get seasick.â
