âGardens and weedâ
Daniel POV
âWith all due respect, go fĂŒck yourself.â
Marcus took that as an invitation to stab me with another pin.
âYouâre enjoying this, arenât you?â I winced.
âItâs tradition to wear robes for the engagement.â Marcus said, dryly. âForgive me for not being an expert at making a human burrito.â
In about one hour, Iâd be getting engaged looking like Red Riding Hood. Fantastic .
âI miss my pants.â I said, wistfully. âAnd my alcohol.â
âDonât we all.â Marcus muttered.
Ten minutes later, the butler was done making me look like the halloween cloth ghost.
I peeked in the mirror. The robes were dark red with a gold lining. I cringed.
Xavierâs going to have a field day with this.
There was a knock. Marcus opened the door and the temperature inside dropped about five degrees.
âWhere is my son?â
King Anton Grigori slowly entered, leaning on his cane. He was a frail man with salt and pepper hair but presence shouted power. Marcus and I bowed in respect to the Crown King of Europe.
âHeâs here, Your Grace.â I hesitated. âHe isnât ready yet-â
âHow many years?â Anton coughed. âWhere is my son?â
âI need time.â I said. âIâll convince him. I promise.â
He stared out the window.
âYou always listen to me.â He zoned out. âYouâre a good boy. Youâll make a good king, son.â
I led him out and called for a maid. He kept going.
âJust like your mother. Yes, youâre a good boy.â
I felt tremors as I held his hand.
âYouâre a good boy, Xavier.â
I sighed, as the maid helped him to his chamber.
The King often slipped into these âepisodesâ. I knew heâd never been kind to Xavier when he was growing up.
So naturally, I felt like crap when he mistook me for his son.
Despite the manâs illness, Xavier deserved to hear this from his father.
âAlcohol?â Marcus offered me a glass.
âPants?â I countered, downing it.
âDonât push it.â He held the door open. âTime for your grand entry, sire.â
Great. I thought, groaning. All Iâm missing now are the heels and a fĂŒcking tiara.
The ceremony wasnât too bad. Alexandra looked stunning in her white robes. As per tradition, we read our oaths, exchanged rings and greeted each otherâs families.
Well, I did trip once and almost land face first on the ground.
Xavier was standing next to me, the poster child of innocence.
âYou need any help there, milady?â He asked sweetly.
Naturally, I was furious.
âDid you push me?â
âNope. Just good timing.â The bĂ€stard smiled. âWonder Woman called. She wants her cape back.â
I groaned. And so it begins .
âA rare sight, ladies and gentleman. Mario without his overalls.â
âLaugh all you want.â I muttered. âYouâre never going to look this fabulous.â
âSpoken like a true Angry Bird.â He saluted. âAll hail the motherfĂŒcking Strawberry king.â
I sighed. âAre you done yet?â
âFor now.â He shrugged, eying the buffet table. âSomeone wants to meet you by the balcony.â
I arched a brow.
Xavier sighed and dragged me outside.
âVictoria better not be waiting there to pull some shĂźtty prank on me.â I fumed. âI swear that woman is Satanâs twin sister-â
Lady Adriana was standing in the moonlight, her mismatched eyes looking at us curiously.
âIâll be sure to pass along the message to Shortcake.â Xavier said, deadbeat. âAlso, you look like you sneezed on your period.â
My mouth fell open as Adriana stifled a laugh.
â Now Iâm done.â Xavier smiled. âYou kids behave.â
He left me alone with her.
Which was awkward as fĂŒck.
What could I possibly talk about with the sister of my future wife? The weather?
âUm, itâs a cloudy night.â I managed.
I groaned on the inside. That line with this dress :
President of the great country of Lame.
âYes, I like cloudy skies.â She said softly, looking up. âI like to think theyâre magical.â
âYeah, I find evaporation fascinating too.â
Kill. Me. Now.
She smiled politely. âWould you like to go for a walk, Your Grace?â
âSure.â
We headed downstairs into the garden in comfortable silence.
A long time later, Adriana turned to talk to me.
âI just wanted to congratulate you on your engagement, Your Grace.â
âOh.â I donât know why I felt disappointed. âThanks. Your sister seems very, um, nice.â
The truth was I didnât even know her sisterâs middle name. This was a political marriage â heirs werenât expected and neither was love.
âShe is.â Adriana said, quietly. âSheâs outgoing, smart, talented, beautiful-â
âBut?â I asked, as we sat down on a bench.
âNothing.â Adriana looked away. âSheâs perfect.â
I put my hand over hers instinctually.
âPerfection is overrated, donât you think?â I smiled at her. âUnique gets more points on my list.â
She turned to me and looked like she wanted to say something. But it began raining. For some reason, we just sat there.
Her eyes looked like they were scanning my very soul.
But then the moment was gone and the awkwardness returned with a bang.
I just hit on my fiancĂ©âs sister .
ShĂźt .
âI have to go.â She said, bowing. âIt was, um, nice to meet you, Your Grace.â
âThe pleasure was mine, Lady Adriana.â
Suddenly, there was a painful wail. I ran toward the bushes and saw a man clutching his chest.
I knelt down and realised heâd been stabbed.
Adriana gasped, holding back a scream.
The man tried to tell me something but I heard only two words. I looked around for the murderer and came up short.
He died, clutching my hands. His blood seeped the ground and my robes.
It took me a minute to process it all after which I called Xavier. He came running, along with Victoria.
Xavier looked at me, then at the body.
âWhat did you do?â
âNothing. I â I donât know what happened.â My voice trembled. âHe died. J-Just like that.â
Victoria gently pried my hands off the body and I let her.
âDo you know who this is?â Xavier asked, quietly.
There was a soft sob in the corner. Lady Adriana was shaking violently, eyes glazed. Her voice was barely a whisper.
âThatâs my father.
