The Genotype Test Episode Five
Luke drove into the compound with speed and parked his car under the shade. He was coming from the hospital where he had received the bad news that Amanda was not his baby. He was surprised to see another car parked under the shade. He looked around and saw a young man standing and leaning on the car which was parked there.
It was the first time he was seeing that face as he didn’t know the man. Luke thought of greeting the fellow but decided against it. The boot of the fellow’s car was opened and some bags were already loaded in it. Luke recognized the bags and he knew they belonged to his wife, Agnes. He and the strange man cast suspicious glances at each other before Luke entered the building without saying a word.
“What’s going on?” Luke asked himself as he climbed the stairs, rushing to get to the living room with speed. He saw that the entrance door was open and when he entered the living room, he saw Amanda running around and playing with her toys. When he saw Amanda, he became very emotional.
“So, this baby girl is not my own? I never knew this would happen to me. This is shocking. I have grown to be attached to her, but now, it looks like we are going to path ways. I’m sorry girl. It was not my fault. Your mother brought this upon you. When you grow up, I hope you would understand and I hope you would find the maturity to forgive me because I have no option than to let you and your mother go. This would help me maintain my sanity. I don’t want to run mad because I got married.” Luke said in his heart. As he stood there talking in his heart and looking at Amanda, the baby girl saw him and quickly rushed to hug him.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Amanda shouted as she threw her arms open and Luke carried her. She had missed Luke for the few hours she had been away from the house. But little did she know that the person she was calling Daddy was not her father.
“How are you Amanda? I missed you. Where did you go?” Luke asked the innocent kid. There were tears rushing from his eyes as he could not control his emotions. It was too much for him to carry, because the fact that Amanda was not his child terrible broke his heart.
“Where did you go Amanda? You disappeared and left me alone when I was making food for you. Where did you go?” Luke asked again.
“She did not disappear. I was the one who took her.” Agnes said. She was just coming out from her personal room with her last bag. She was packing her things to leave the house. She had already finished packing everything that belonged to her and her daughter. She was ready to say goodbye to Luke. She wanted to do it secretly but unfortunately, Luke came back before she could leave.
“You must have done the DNA test and discovered the truth right?” Agnes asked Luke who was still holding on to Amanda with tears in his eyes. He was looking at Agnes intently so he could hear the explanation she was going to give.
“You must have discovered the truth right? I was trying to protect you from the truth. That was why I refused to do the DNA test. I didn’t want you to feel this pain you are feeling right now. But you insisted that was what you wanted. Well, how does it feel now that you know the bitter truth?” Agnes asked as she walked casually from the door closer to where Luke was standing with Amanda in his arms.
“Why did you do it? Why did you cheat on me? Agnes, I loved and cherished you, but you had the heart to cheat on me, get pregnant under my roof and gave birth to the child without my knowledge. You are very heartless.” Luke said to Agnes. He dipped his hand in his pocket and handed the DNA test result to her. She opened it and read through.
“Yea! The result is correct. Amanda is not your child. I have always known. I knew from the day she was conceived that she doesn’t belong to you. But there was nothing I could do. I’m sorry Luke. I’m sorry this happened, but I guess it’s now too late to say sorry.” Agnes said. She too had started crying like Luke.
“Oh yes! I’m glad you know it’s too late to say sorry! There’s nothing like us anymore. We are done with this marriage. It’s time to go our separate ways so I can have peace of mind.” Luke said. He was still crying.
“I know it’s over! I know we can’t remedy the situation. That’s why I’m packing my things to leave the house. It’s over I know. I just want to ask for your forgiveness. It was not my fault.”
Agnes said.
“It was my fault then?” Luke asked as he got more furious.
“It was not your fault either. I blame love for this. I was in love with someone else before you married me. He is the father of Amanda.” Agnes said tearfully.
“And who is this man that took over my wife and got her pregnant?” Luke asked.
“The man you saw when you were coming into the house, he is Amanda’s real father. He was my fiance before I met you. He was going to marry me. But unfortunately, when we went to do genotype test to see if we were compatible, we discovered that I was AS and he was also AS. We broke up because we were advised not to get married since we would give birth to sick babies. It was a difficult moment for both of us because we loved each other so much and we had dated for five years. We had no option but to break up. It was after we broke up that I met and married you. I did not really love you. My heart was still with my boyfriend, to be honest. I thought about him every day and night. I could not stop thinking about him until I started visiting him secretly after I married you. When you go to work, I usually go to his house to stay with him. That was how I got pregnant for him while still under your roof. I decided to keep the baby hoping that she would come out normal, but here we are today. My secret romance is ending our marriage. Please, forgive me. It was the fault of love.” Agnes said with tears rushing from her eyes like tap water.
Luke was very sad and he was still crying, knowing that he married a woman whose heart was with another man. It was like he was waiting for a ship at the airport. He would never see a ship, because ships don’t come to airports.
As Agnes finished talking, Luke gently placed Amanda on the floor and Agnes picked her up and left the room.
“Goodbye Luke.” Agnes said as she shut the door behind her.
As she stepped down to meet her baby daddy, she was still crying.
“It’s okay my love. I will marry you. I promise you, we won’t have any other babies. We will you, we won’t have any other babies. We will just see how we can raise this one so she can stay alive. We will just live together and be happy because our hearts belongs together. I can’t live without you.” Agnes’s baby daddy said as he hugs her and took Amanda from her.
“My advice to everyone is to go for a genotype test as soon as you see that your relationship is getting serious. Don’t wait for years and don’t wait to do important medical tests only a week to your wedding. Don’t wait for too long like we did. The outcome is usually more painful when after many years, you discover your genotype did not match the person you really love.” The baby daddy said as they drove away.
Luke later recovered from the shock, got married to another woman and became a happy man.
THE END.
