The Genotype Test Episode Four
When Luke returned from the hospital, he did not see Agnes at home. The house looked deserted and as silent as a graveyard. He checked everywhere but saw no sign that his wife was in the compound. She was not seen in her personal room as well, though her things were still in the house. Luke wondered where his wife must have gone to.
He knew Amanda must have been very hungry,
so he decided it would be good to feed her. Luke
went into the kitchen and prepared one sachet
of Golden Morn, added some milk into it and
brought it out to the living room. However, when
he returned to the living room, Amanda was
nowhere to be found. He scurried around the
room looking for her.
Luke searched every corner of the house and even the entire compound but he found no trace of Amanda. It was strange to him because he spent just about fifteen minutes in the kitchen just to boil water and make Golden Morn for her, but now she appeared to have disappeared.
“What is going on? Where is the baby I left here just now? This is so strange. Did she disappear or what? But I kept her here. Someone must have taken her. She can’t walk that fast on her own. How did she walk downstairs alone? I’m sure someone must have taken her. But the question is, who took her? Because I did not even hear any footsteps. Is the person a ghost?” Luke wondered in his heart as he kept pacing around the house.
He brought out his phone and dialed his wife’s number but it did not ring because the number was switched off. Luke was confused as he was not able to figure out what happened to Amanda. He thought of going to file a report at the police station but he decided against it.
“If until tomorrow I don’t see her, I will report to the police.” Luke said to himself but he was still restless. He went to the kitchen and dropped the plate of Golden Morn and prepared himself to go out in search of Amanda. He wanted to see if she would be wondering in the neighborhood. He wanted to know if she had somehow made it outside the gate and lost her way.
“Amanda where are you? Where are you? I don’t want anything to happen to you.” Look said as he drove out of the compound in search of the baby. He drove with low speed, looking around the streets through the car window. He drove around the streets and crisscrossed all the nooks and crannies he knew about in the area but he found no trace of Amanda.
“This is so strange. How can a child just disappear in a twinkling of an eye and she would be nowhere to be found. Who took my daughter and why? Was she kidnapped?” Luke asked himself as he was driving back to the house.
When he got home, it was already getting dark, so he crashed in one of the chairs in the living room and slept off.
When he woke up in the morning, he did not bother about breakfast. He took his bath and drove to the hospital to collect the result of the DNA test he and Amanda did the previous day.
“Please sit down, the result is ready.” Doctor Nat tells Luke when he was ushered into the office. The doctor carefully opened the envelope containing the DNA test result. He brought out the document in it and then started reading after putting on his glasses.
“The DNA results I have here show that you are not the biological father of Amanda. There’s no trace that Amanda is related to you by blood.” Doctor Nat declared.
“I knew it! I knew it!” Luke said. He was practically shouting in excitement. Soon, he started weeping profusely. He has passed through a lot since the baby was born. Most of his income went into treating Amanda because she was always sick.
“So, I have been raising a child that does not belong to me all these while? I have been suffering to raise another man’s child? I have spent a fortune trying to see if this child would remain alive. Now, it turns out that she is not even my biological daughter. I don’t know if I will be able to come out of this because I have grown attached to Amanda only for me to now find out that she is not my blood. How could Agnes do this to me? I trusted her before getting married to her. How am going to sleep and wake up tomorrow knowing that I have been suffering to raise a child that is not my own? I’m so heartbroken right now.” Luke said to the doctor.
“Calm down Luke. The situation is bad but this is not the end of life. I’m sure you can overcome this. You have done your best. As a matter of fact, you are a good man with a kind heart. You fought bravely to help Amanda. You never abandoned her even when her situation was very bad. I know some men who abandoned their families because they discovered that the babies they were having were sickle cell carriers. But you stayed and looked after the child up to this moment. But I want to ask, where is your wife and the baby?” Doctor Nat asked.
“That is another disturbing part. Both of them are nowhere to be found. I got home yesterday and I did not see my wife. I kept the baby in the living room and went into the kitchen to make food for her. When I came out with her food, she had disappeared into thin air. I searched everywhere and I couldn’t see her neither did I see my wife. It’s so strange. I’m so confused right now.” Luke said with tears in his eyes.
Despite the bad situation, Luke decided to go home, rest and to think of the next line of action.
Watch out for the next episode.
