MARTINâS ACCIDENT AND DNA TEST
About three Months later
It has been barely three months since Sarah ran away from home. She was afraid her father would reprimand her for trying to sabotage her brotherâs wedding. Stephen Donkor , Sarahâs father was getting ready to go to work when his ex- girlfriend Doreen called him with some disturbing news. She told him that his son Martin was involved in a terrible accident and was sent to the Korle-Bu teaching Hospital. Stephen nearly collapse when she conveyed that news to him. He began to palpitate.â
Quickly, he entered his car and drove towards Korle-Bu teaching Hospital. It was about 45 minutesâ drive from his house. Once he turned round Airport Residential Area, he moved straight into the Ring Road West, passed the Good News Embassy and then turned right into Guggisberg Ave, and there it was-Korle â Bu Teaching Hospital.
In the Hospital
Stephen virtually jumped out of the car and entered the hospital.Doreen was sitting at the OPD (Out Patient Department) They quickly consulted a nurse who directed them to a doctor at the Emergency Ward. Upon reaching the Emergency Ward, they saw Martin wrapped in bandage.
A lot of machines were fixed on him. An electro cardiogram to measure his heartâs electrical activities and a sensor pulse oximeter, painlessly attached to his fingertips to measure his pulse. Doctor Clark switched to operation mood, been assisted by his nurses, each carrying a specific instrument.
To assess the extent of damage to his internal organs due to the accident, he performed an x-ray, ultra sound and MRI to show the damages to his lungs, heart, ribs and blood vessels. After that, a bronchoscopy was done to repair the damages to his airways and lungs. After doing his part professionally, the doctor placed the rest was in the hands of the Almighty God.
âHe will be in the hospital for a month. I want to be sure there was no internal bleeding,â doctor Clark said. He also suggested Stephen should donate his blood, just in case it might become necessary for his son to use.Personally, Stephen didnât believe in blood donation as a medical option, an idea he picked from his friend who was a Jehovahâs Witness. Nevertheless, he was obliged to do it. He waited impatiently at the visitorâs parlour with Doreen. Doreen looked worried as if she was struggling not to say what she wanted to say. Stephen decided not to push it. An hour later, Doctor Clark summoned him.
He said, âyour blood did not seem to be compatible with my patient, your âsonâ. I suggest you do a DNA test.â
âDNA Test? âwhy? â Stephen asked quite angrily. âTo make sure Martin is actually your son, the doctor said explicitly. âHe was confused. He asked himself, âWhy?â Would Doreen give me a child who is not mine?
âNo. No,â He doubted it. He said the doctor may have gotten the test wrong somehow. Then he remembered a nurse told him doctor Clark had worked in UK for ten years, and had acquired a lot of experiences.
He reasoned a simple blood group compatibility test wonât be too difficult for him to handle. He wanted to ask Doreen about the paternity of his âsonâ but concluded she would lie about it. He opted for the DNA Test as suggested by the doctor. Martin laid on his bed asleep. Doctor Clark said he should come for the test result in two daysâ time.
When one is anxious for an event or an expectation, time doesnât move fast enough. Those two days were like two- hundred years to him. If Martin was not his son, then he still didnât have a son and Doreen had an explanation to make. âWhy would she give another manâs son to me and give me a false hope that I have a son? Stephen asked himself.
Stephen wished the issue would not reach the stage where he would be infuriated to kill her. There was another issue. Sarah, his daughter was in love with Martin, if Martin proved not to be his son, then they had denied her the opportunity to marry a good man. (To Stephen,Martin was the most disciplined young man he had ever seen in a generation where he doubted if there were still have good and responsible young men who will be presented with an opportunity to have sex with a lady and still reject it) Well, he was married now anyway. But why is his wife not here? He asked himself.
He sent his daughter in law Claudia several text messages about her husbands accident She had also not pick his calls. Where is Claudia?
The second day
âMr. Donkor Stephen, your DNA test results were in, âsaid Doctor Clark. Stephenâs heart skipped a bit. He asked the Doctor, â is Martin my son or not?â
â Iâm sorry to break your heart but the DNA test result showed Martin is NOT your son, âDoctor Clark said calmly, in his British accent. âWhat!!!,â he shouted.
âWhat he feared had happened. Doreen is a liar,â he shouted.
Dr. Clark continued,â We did a blood test known as Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). To be sure, we also used a procedure called a Buccal scrap.
Considering âyour sonâsâ Rhesus factor we âŠ.â
He ran away from his office before Dr. Clark finished explaining his medical jargon to him. Without caring if people were around, he attacked Doreen, who was sitting at the Out-Patient-Department. (OPD)âYou cheap s–t of a woman, you deceived me Martin is my son!â
He was shaking with anger. She tried to give an explanation but he gave her two quick slaps which sent her crashing on the ground in tears. He left the hospital in a fit of anger. At home, he told Lucy what happened at the Hospital and about Martinâs DNA test result.
Three days later
Doreen paid him a visit at his workplace; Crystal Insurance Company. His anger had subsided, and he was more friendly towards her. â You are welcome Doreen,â he said, a bit guilty for slapping her at the hospital a few days ago.
âThank you, Stephen,â Doreen said. â Iâm sure you know why Iâm here so I will go straight to the point.
âI always thought Stephen was your son because I slept with you when I was in my danger period. We broke up three days after the coition. A week after our break-up, I began feeling sick and vomiting so I concluded that I was pregnant. â
âI met Dickson later and he forcefully slept with me, the result for which he was in now in prison. So all along, I thought you are the father of my son. The reason I didnât tell you earlier was because I donât want to bring confusion into your marriage to my best friend Lucy though she didnât deserve it. After all, she stole you from me. I love you too much to break your home. Come to think of it, if Lucy were to know I have a âsonâ for you, she will have killed him long time since she filled your house with only females.
âHave you done any test to really prove you were pregnant by then?â He asked.
âNo, I havenât,â she said.
âThen how could you be so sure Martin was my son?
Doreen was quiet.
Stephen told Doreen the fact that she was vomiting or feeling feverish was not enough proof she was pregnant at the time she suspected she was. He said it may be mere coincidence.â
Doreen was quiet for a while and then say, âYes, you are right. I should have tested myself before coming to the conclusion I drew about my pregnancy.â
âYea, you should have. As it stands now, the rapist you called Dickson Vanderpuye is Martinâs biological Father.â
Doreen said, âI am sorry I put you through all this and raising your hope of having a son.â Stephen was very impressed with Doreenâs sincerity and was endeared to her.He decided to hug her as a sign of forgiveness. He drew closer to her and they hugged each other heartily.
Suddenly, the spark of old passion flushed through their body and ignited their pheromones. He could feel Doreenâs body shook with emotion. He remembered the good old times and how strong their love-making was by then. It all came back flooding his mind with sensual scenes.
âEverything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learnt whatever state I am, therein to be content.â- Hellen Keller
