Too Late

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 21

Karen was pregnant for Kam.

Two months had already gone. She loved the expression on Kam’s face when she first broke the news to him. He had kissed her, then carefully carried her to bed where he made love to her.

Kam made sure Karen got whatever she requested for. He had even suggested she stopped working but Karen won’t hear of it.

“I don’t want to have contact with your stupid Lily”

“Okay”

Kam carried her like egg. All Karen’s dirty clothes goes to the dry cleaner. He stocks the fridge with fruits and vegetables. He gives her money even when she didn’t request for it.

“Always buy whatever you need”

At two months, she had started buying baby things. Kam will drive her to the market and they begin to pick things. She was always buying new things. Her customer would call her that she has new stock and Karen will buy more. She was just excited.

The day she slept in Kam’s room, she discovered the things Kam bought for Lily months ago. They were still intact in nylons.

“You bought these for me and hid it? When were you thinking of giving these to me?” She asked removing the shoes from the nylon and wearing one.

“I was keeping them until you get pregnant. Now that you are, please take them” he said laughing.

She rushed into his arms and kissed him, them returned to inspect the other items in the nylon.

“Wow these are expensive”

“You can say that again. Come here!” He said.

Karen stood before him. He kissed her stomach and made her sit on his leg.

“You have brought me so much joy Karen. Few months from now, I will be a father. I have made up my mind to go see your parents. Let me get what it entails to marry an angel like you”

Karen laughed and kissed him deeply.

“Take it easy Angel” he told her

Both of them fixed a date to travel. The day they were to travel, Karen fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. She spent four days in the hospital before she was discharged. Kam stayed with her all through. He was afraid that Karen might miscarriage. He told her he would not allow her make such journey to Akwa-Ibom until she is strong enough.

Since Stanley transferred the N19m to Rosa they have been living in a hotel.

“I can’t continue to cook. Let’s lodge in a good hotel” She had suggested to him and Stanley didn’t disagree.

When buyers came for the house, he was the one who sold it and handed over the money to her. His car too was sold.

In the hotel, both of them sat on the bed drinking malt.

“You have been such a wonderful and cooperative man” Rosa told him dropping her empty bottle on the table.

Stanley smiled and dropped his unfinished malt too.

“I decided long ago not to harm you because you have been cooperative. I want to go somewhere, but I wouldn’t want to leave you empty”

She left the bed and collected her handbag from the chair. She opened it and brought out some money which she handed to him.

“How much did we sell the house” She asked

“N46m”

“Good God”

“And the car?”

“N1.2m”

“Good. What I just gave you is part of your share” She said

“Count the money please”

Rosa sat on the bed again and watched him count the money.

“N12,000” He said

“It’s a consolation gift Stanley. Please use it judiciously. Like I said, you won’t see me again Stanley. I am leaving you”

“Leaving me?” He asked worried.

“Yes!”

He went on his knees, held her hands and began to beg her. He shed a few tears but Rosa was already up and walking to the door.

“Let’s go” She said

Stanley ran after her. They boarded a bike in front of the hotel. The bike man had covered some distance before she asked him to stop.

“Stanley, please come down and wait here for me” She said.

Rosa waited patiently for him to get down before instructing the bike man to proceed. She smiled and waved at him while the bike man sped past him.

Stanley stood under the sun for close to two hours waiting for Rosa to return to him. A man who saw what happened, crossed over to meet Stanley.

“Oga comot for sun na” He said

Stanley looked at him and smiled.

“I am waiting for my woman”

“Woman ke!. Abeg leave the sun. Sit down for that shop and wait for her”

He grudgingly left the sun and sat in an empty shop waiting for Rosa till it was late in the night. By the time his eyes would be clear, Rosa was nowhere to be found.

Rosa stood before Baba Ifa laughing. She was so excited.

“Mission accomplished Baba. The fool fell like a pack of card. No problem encountered” she said.

“You are a true daughter”

“I have transfered your share Baba”

The old man laughed.

“I saw it. The gods blessed me through you”

Baba had no client and so Rosa spent time gisting with him.

“I have found another man.” She said. “I think I have feelings for him.”

“Are you saying that you have fallen in love?” He asked surprised

“Maybe yes. I just have feelings. Strong feelings Baba!”

“Hmmm!, This is a new development”

“Yes Baba. But there’s a problem”

“Ehenn!”

“The man is wealthy”

“That is not a problem”

“Yes, but the problem is his wife”

“He is married?

“Yes!”

Baba sighed deeply and shook his head.

“He is a preacher” She said.

Baba laughed

“Of all men in this town, it is a preacher you have feelings for. This is serious”

“He has been preaching to me. I have tried everything to seduce him but it’s not working. I have even started attending his church.”

Baba stood up and entered his shrine. Rosa followed him.

“But Baba, the preacher is just a human being like me. He can fall, can’t he?. There must be something you can do to make him fall for me. I don’t care if he is married. I just like him. Please make a connection between us”

“Let’s see!” He said.

He stood before his great mirror

“What’s his name”

“Evangelist Chris”

He started making incantations in a strange language.

“Aah!. This one is not to be touched oo.

“He can be touched. He is an ordinary man baba. Try Baba. I don’t want to miss him”

“Look properly”

As Rosa looked closely at the mirror, he saw Evang Chris. He was on his knees with his wife in their bedroom.

“Aah!. This woman is a tigress oo. She will spoil any charm I give you”

“Do something Baba” She cried.

He turned his back against the mirror and smiled at her

“Let me try”

“Please Baba” She said.

“Step back” he ordered and Rosa returned to her seat.

She waited for him to give her some charms to use. Her waiting didn’t last long. He gave her charms and instructed her on how to use it.
