Episode 42

Daveā€™s side of the story continues

I got up immediately i heard the knock or should i say tap on my door. I told whoever is there to come in but no one was forth-coming. I got up and opened the door. No one was in sight. I went back inside and landed on my bed. I was very sure i heard a knock but it seems like i was imagining it. I then got up and locked the door. Me i dey fear oo. I slept off some time after.

-the next day-
I woke up very tired and weak. That very moment i remembered that i am yet to discuss with my king about my decision to go the university. I rushed to the bathroom and did my hygiene in haste, because i wanted to discuss with him before he starts attending to his court officials. I wore a short and a nigeria t-shirt and headed to the throne room. On getting there, i prostrated and greeted my king, as he was alone, with a few guards close by. He asked about my general welfare and i responded well. He then asked about my motive for coming there so early in the morning and i responded thus:

Dave: ā€œyour highness, i am a man. A man whom you have turned his life around drastically. You picked me up from the gutter and raised me to unimaginable glory and riches. Iā€™ll forever be in your debt. You gave me shelter in your domain and i get to wine and dine with you the king and your family, i, who is not of royal blood get to live, eat and speak with royalty like i were part of it. I thank you so much your majesty. But a very close friend of mine has made me see that i donā€™t deserve all of these splendor, and i didnā€™t work for itā€

King: ā€œdonā€™t say that my boy, of course you deserve it. You saved my life. You saved the kingā€™s life and for that i have given you everything you have. You may not have used your strength and sweat to have everything you have today, but i tell you that what you did is greater than every other hard laborā€

Dave: ā€œmy king, you might see it as an extraordinary thing but to me, its a duty i must fulfill as your servant. Your highness i was raised by my parents as a hardworking person. Someone who would struggle in order to eat, and thatā€™s the person i am today. I have struggled ever since the death of my parents, doing every sort of hard jobs under the sun, and i am very proud of it. Thatā€™s why i have decided that i want to work for my own money. I know it canā€™t be the manner of job i did before but i want to do something with my life. So, what i want to do at this stage is to get a university certificate and use that to start workingā€

He simply smiled and stretched his hand towards me for a handshake which i held with both hands. He shaked my hands vigorously and said:
ā€œthatā€™s what i have been waiting to hear from you ever since. Now you are thinking like a man with a future. I support you my son and i know you will be great somedayā€ he said grinning. I smiled and bowed slightly. We talked for some more minutes about how, when and where iā€™ll school. As i was walking away he said that i should not try to pay for anything at all because heā€™ll take care of it and he doesnā€™t want to hear my opinion about it. I smiled and said ā€˜thank uā€™.

I left there and returned to my room. I started reflecting on the plans i have- in two months time jamb will be kicking off and iā€™ll enroll for it, computer science, uniben. The princesses were already there. Yeah, this is gonna be exciting
