Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 10

I was not in a mood to cook.

Lately i did only what i felt I could. The divorce was slowly sapping energy out of me.

Patiently i waited for my turn to be served. This had been our favourite restaurant. We had date nights here and also took take-outs from this place. It served the best and affordable food in town. I stared at our favourite seat with the feel of loneliness and nostalgia slowly engulfing my heart with its cold arms.

I was brought back to reality with the waiter calling my name.

“Excuse me, Ella?”

“Sorry, half chicken and fries please.” I said smiling apologetically.

“Half chicken and fries coming up.” Val responded.

“We have missed seeing you around.” Val continued saying while packing chips for me.

“What?” I asked surprised.

“You used to come every Tuesday evening, you are among our favourite customers.”

“We got a lot of work lately we will resume in time.” I said brandishing a reassuring smile.

“Half chicken and chips that’s 400.” Val said.

I removed the money from my purse and paid then collected the pack of chips and Chicken.

“Thanks.” I said politely.

“Welcome

. Don’t be too busy till you miss the precious moments

. Next!” Val called.

I nodded and headed for the door. Before i could leave, a laughter rang in my ear that sounded familiar. I turned and saw Uri and Joyce sitting at the furthest end of the restaurant. He looked happy munching his food and chatting with the woman sitting across her. I felt acid filling my stomach and rising up my gullet. I stayed transfixed at one position.

You can’t let this get to you, be the better person and walk away.

Breathing in. I opened the door and let my shaky legs carry me to the car.

I fished out my car keys from the trench coat and tried fixing them on the car to unlock it but they slipped and felt due to the fact that I was shaking. I bent down to pick them but Uri beat me to it. He extended his hands to give me the keys but quickly withdrew.

“Ella…”

“That’s our favourite restaurant Uri, why would you bring her here?”

“Ella, you are over reacting, it’s just a friendly evening out.”

“Friendly evening out my foot….”

I made to open my car door out of irritation but stopped when I realized Uri still had the keys.

I turned around and he dangled the key.

“It may be my fault we separated but she has always been in the picture. I married you Uri, I loved you. But you I don’t know, you brought me gifts on our date nights and 90 % of them were chosen by Joyce and if I react am being dramatic. We cannot even have a conversation without the J word coming up!” I screamed at him.

“Ella you being…” Before he could finish I interrupted him.

“Am being over dramatic. Uri. Am being overdramatic because reading people is what I do for a living and I see you both.

“Now what’s that supposed to mean Ella?

“When Abigael died I closed off. I have never lost anyone to death. All my relatives that I know of are alive. Am sorry I grieved too hard, am sorry it took long for me to recover, I am sorry though I am the emotion doctor I could not help myself but you,…..you ran…to her.” I said pointing towards the restaurant.

“Ella..”

“Don’t bother denying it. Two weeks after we buried her you left the house in the evening. I called you when you delayed.

. You did not hang up the phone immediately we finished talking and I heard her asking you what I wanted. She asked you why your wife was calling, your grieving wife. She did not have the right to ask that but you made her feel she could.”

“Ella you pushed me away and down, hard”

“You damn right I did. You are acting like a damn fool. I bet she treats you better than your wife ever has. I bet she is able to find your car keys when you misplace them, unlike me who helps you find them and we end up being late for work. I bet she straightens your neck ties at work when you are getting ready for a meeting making you feel alive, a man again. I bet she is not mad when you talk about your nagging wife back at home like I would be when she came up in our conversations. I bet she tells you that she hopes I knew how lucky I was for having you.”

“Ella we are just friends, we understand each other.”

“I did not realize I married a dumb husband till you spoke that word.”

Uri shoulders dropped.

“We understand each other, not you and Joyce. Tell me something Uri why is your friend spending her evenings with his boss who is about to get divorced? Tell me!” I screamed.

He stayed silent clenching his chin his forehead vein bulging.

“You are getting mad Uri, do you want to defend her, you have feelings for her Uri? Don’t you worry my love its only two months left and I will sign the papers. There is no need to get in the way of love.”

I grabbed the key from him and opened the door while sobbing uncontrollably.

“Ella wait.”

“Am done waiting, I hope you are happy now.”

I opened the door and furiously start the ignition key.

Then I sped off in style.
