Episode 51

“Calm down.” Ken interrupted me softly, now using his hand to soothe my bare shoulder. “No matter what you say, I’ll still keep telling you to always appreciate God’s love for you because He alone knows your true purpose in life. Look, I’ve seen people who are suffering so much than you could ever imagine. If you think your case is the worst one yet, why don’t you go to places like Oshodi, Ajegunle or even Mushin just so you can see how people live their lives there. A lot of people don’t have two legs. Some are blind. Some are deaf and dumb. Some don’t even have hands and legs at all, and they still survive only by God’s grace because they get help from people by begging for alms and then after all the struggle they must’ve passed through during the day, they would go back to sleep under various bridges at night. Do you know how dangerous that is – especially in a tough city like Lagos?”

If words were like sharp matchetes, I was almost positive that I would’ve received a deep cut on my skin due to the strong effect they had on me. Kennedy’s voice and words carried so much passion that flowed right into my ears and registered a place on my heart. I was touched. Very touched, in fact.
“I’m sorry.” I said, placing my hand on his right hand which had been on my shoulder all along. “You’re right. I should learn to see the truth more often instead of wallowing in self pity all the time. And, just so you know, I really appreciate each and every one of you who has been with me till now. I wish there was something I could do to pay you all back in tenfolds.”

“Actually, there is.” He smiled, looking right into my eyes. “Happiness is the keyword. Just be happy. That’s all we want from you.”

I smiled too, tightening my firm grip on his hand. I was about to say ‘thank you’ but something else popped into my head instead, and I spat it out at once.
“Can I ask you a question, Ken?”
“Come on, hit me straight up! I’m all ears.”

“What exactly do you see in me?” I asked, furrowing my brows again as I retained a calm facial expression. “I’m not a child anymore. I know what’s up. I’ve seen what’s coming from a mile away. Tell me what you want from me so I can be prepared for what follows after it.”
