Episode 49

“Wow. This is something serious!” I exclaimed, leaving my mouth wide open. “I’m aware about certain allergies, but I’ve never heard of something like this before. Is it that bad?”
“It’s so terrible!” He affirmed, clenching his fists as he got up from the sofa. “Please, can we leave this place?”

“Why?” I was surprised. “I mean, what for?”

“With all due respect, I don’t want to be the one who ends up killing your beloved cat.” Ken said, still looking at the animal and frowning sternly. “’Cause it’s getting too close to us, and I’m not comfortable with its stare. Can we just go?”
“Alright. It’s cool. I understand.” I grabbed my crutches and got up too. “Let’s just go outside to have a stroll or something. Would that be fine by you?”
“Excellent idea!” Ken agreed at once, walking ahead of me toward the door. When he got there and opened it, he muttered: “After you, sunshine. Ladies first.”

I chuckled and bit my lower lip as I used my elbow to hit his left arm on purpose, then I hissed, passed him and went outside as fast as I could. Ken was laughing when he came out too, then he closed the door gently and started to adjust his shoelaces like a professional fashion designer on set. Before we took any other step, I shouted my father’s nickname three times until he popped his head out of the window of his bedroom which was upstairs, then I informed him about our intention to stroll around the estate so that he could lock the door and be safe inside the house. My father was a man of few words. He wasn’t overdramatic like my mother who would’ve interrogated me about where I was going to with a man, what we were both going to do there, and when I would come back home. Words could not describe how lucky I was to have such freedom of movement today, simply because of my darling mother’s absence.

However, we left the compound, talking and joking until we got to a vendor who was standing under the shade of a barren guava tree, selling yoghurt, portable cakes and several snacks. We patronized her, left a small tip for support, encouraged her with nice words and continued our clueless adventure on the sandy road. The weather was in our favor. Neither was it sunny, nor was it cloudy. It was just a normal day that brought about a favorable weather for us earthlings.
