It’s a…

Salem Black

After a week of trying I finally got my girlfriend to step foot back into her bedroom. This is her house. She shouldn’t be afraid to be in a room she pays for.

She couldn’t stand in the room longer than two minutes so I just kept assuring her Jason wasn’t coming back and that I’m here with her.

By Christmas she was able to sit in the room and watch multiple movies, (with me being there as emotional support). Yesterday was the first time she slept in her bed since the…incident. I made sure to strip the entire bed and threw away all of her sheets and blankets. A man named Jason Jackson used to sleep in this bed and I refuse to sleep in whatever the fuck they did.

I told Harlow she was going to have to buy a new mattress too but she just looked at me laughed. I was being serious but whatever.

Today was the day of the gender reveals for both Lilian and Raven. Because it was winter time me and Harlow made sure the theme was cute. We didn’t have a lot of time to plan but I think we did a good job.

We kept it small and intimate for the couples. We did hot cocoa bombs and the sprinkles and marshmallows on the inside were either pink or blue.

Raven and Ashley were sitting on one of the couches and Lilian and Fin were on the other. I gave Ashley a cup filled with hot milk and Harlow gave Fin the other. Raven got her hot chocolate ball and Lilian got hers.

The milk in the cups were boiling hot because we didn’t want them waiting for too long. We counted down and then they both put the balls in the cups.

“Its a…girl! Oh my god it’s a girl!” Lilian screamed. “Harlow, it’s a girl what the fuck. Atticus, you get a little sister!”

“Am I trippin’? Babe, you see that too, right?”

“Yeah, I see it.” Ashley nodded.

“Is something wrong?” Harlow questioned, her brows furrowed.

“It’s pink.”

“Yay!” Rylee cheered.

“As long as he’s happy,” Raven shrugged.

I never pictured Raven having any daughters. She’s always talked about only wanting sons but I guess we’re gonna find out what Raven’ll be like as a girl mom.

Ashley was quiet as she held her son in her lap. I knew why. Breast cancer ran in her family and she never wanted to take that risk so she didn’t want a daughter either. And considering it was her egg Raven was carrying, it was now a possibility.

I hope she and Raven talk it out. They are much better at communicating with each other than Harlow and I.

“Fin, how do you feel?” Harlow quizzed.

“I feel great!” He smiled, “I’ve always wanted a daughter and now Atticus has someone else to protect other then his mom, his godmother, and his god-sister.”

“What about you, daddy?” Atticus turned to his father.

“I don’t need you to protect me. I’m strong.”

“Are you stronger than JJ?”

Just hearing his name caused shivers to run up my spine. Smiles faltered as the room went silent. Harlow ran up the stairs causing Lilian and I get up to run after her.

“I got it. Sit down.” I instructed.

I quickly ran up the stairs and immediately went to the room. She wasn’t there so I went down the hall to Halo’s room. She was sitting on the bed with her head in her hands.

“Baby?” My voice was soft.

“Why do I let him do this to me? I can’t even hear his name without breaking down.” She cried.

“That’s not your fault. He put you through hell, and then he- he…he put you through some traumatic shit so yeah, hearing his name is going to affect you. You’re not gonna be jumping with joy, but you can’t allow him to control your life either.”

“You don’t get it, Salem,” She sniffled, “I’ve known him for so long and he was never like this. I don’t know what happened.”

“I don’t. And I probably never will but- I just need you to understand that this isn’t your fault. It never was, and it never will be.” I sighed.

I didn’t receive a response so the room was quiet. Only my breathing and her sniffles could be heard.

“What’s his mom’s number?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“Why?” Harlow asked, her head finally leaving her hands.

“Just give it to me.”

She obliged though she was still skeptical.

Outgoing call to ‘809-321-6258’
Jocelyn Jackson speaking, how can I help you?
Hi, Mrs. Jackson? This is Salem, Harlow’s girlfriend. I was just calling to ask if you could talk some sense into Harlow. Your son-

I don’t have a son.

You know what’s so crazy? Ive heard so much about you and I’ve been meaning to get your number so I could talk to you privately. Harlow’s parents aren’t in her life so I have to be the one who gives her partners the shovel talk and shit.

Mrs. Jackson I can assure you that I have no intentions on hurting Harlow. The shovel talk won’t be necessary.

Wonderful- and please, my name is Jocelyn.

Well, Jocelyn, I thank you for being there for Harlow. I know it wasn’t easy having two teens and a baby in your home.

It actually wasn’t hard at all. They were good parents- I mean they still are- you get what I mean…what did you want me to do?

Talk to Harlow. I usually am able to talk some sense into her but she needs you more right now.

I can do that. Can you hand her the phone?

Of course. Here, baby. It’s Mrs Jackson- I mean Jocelyn.

After handing Harlow the phone I left the room. I wanted to give the two some space to talk.

“Is she okay?” Lilian asked, walking up the stairs.

“Yeah,” I nodded, “She’s talking to Jocelyn right now.”

“Perfect! If there’s one thing Jocelyn’s going to do it’s talk some sense into that girl. I don’t know how she’s able to do it.

“It’s a super power black women have.” I shrugged.
